Individuals, Trusts & Estates

Complex personal returns, and the fiduciary work that often comes with them.

Multiple K-1s, rental activity, equity compensation, multi-state issues, retirement decisions and life changes rarely fit a simple return. Trust and estate responsibilities add filings with their own deadlines.

Joe has extensive experience with complex individual tax matters, and Ronald MacDonald, Jr. brings four decades of work in complex individual and partnership taxation along with trust, estate and gift taxation. Much of this work overlaps: business owners' personal returns, family entities and the estates that eventually hold them.

For individuals, the value is in looking at the whole return rather than one form at a time — how the K-1s interact with the wage income, what basis limitations allow, when to accelerate or defer, and how a state move or a property sale changes the picture.

For fiduciaries, we prepare federal and Massachusetts fiduciary income tax returns, handle beneficiary reporting, and work through gift tax matters. Massachusetts has its own estate tax rules with thresholds that do not match the federal ones, which surprises many families.

We coordinate with your attorney throughout. Probate and trust administration are legal matters; the filings, elections and beneficiary reporting are ours, and the two schedules depend on each other.

Common questions

Questions we hear most

I'm a trustee for the first time. Where do we start?
With the documents and the dates: what kind of entity exists, what tax year applies, and which returns are due. We'll build the filing calendar and coordinate with the attorney.
Does Massachusetts have its own estate tax?
Yes, with its own filing threshold and rules that differ from the federal ones. An estate can have a Massachusetts obligation without a federal one.
Can you handle both my business and personal returns?
Yes, and for pass-through owners we recommend it — the two are one planning problem.

Better financial decisions begin before the return is filed — or the opportunity passes.
